teaching a master class alongside
Joel Thomson in Kaslo, BC
Michael teaches with a custom-made approach. Each student has different goals, background, and abilities, that are at the forefront of lesson planning. Michael draws on years of experience to help students develop strong guitar technique, musical knowledge and literacy, and achieve their own goals with whatever music they want to learn and play.
"He is an experienced and knowledgeable teacher who can customise his teaching approach to suit the learning styles of different students. He is able to effectively communicate with students of any age."

"After stumbling around a bit on my own with self-guided books and online lessons – and getting nowhere fast - I found Michael. I couldn’t have asked for a better teacher! I really benefited from his style of teaching as well as from his knowledge and skill as an accomplished musician. Mike made sure that any guitar technique practices were anchored to a repertoire/study piece, so that it made sense to my adult brain’s need for context and understanding. Though Mike was clear that to develop good skills, one cannot skip steps, he found ‘adult’ musical pieces that kept me motivated and interested. Over the year and a half of regular lessons, Mike good-naturedly and most patiently demonstrated, explained, reminded, repeated, and supported me to grow and keep going. Not only did he help me through the discouraging phases, but through his encouragement, I actually gained enough confidence to participate in the Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festival (as the oldest performer!) I heartily recommend Mike Ibsen to anyone looking to learn and/or enhance their current level of ability; he is a very fine classical guitar teacher."
